Abstract
Environmental
impacts of economic processes have become an increasingly national concern
across the globe ever since the UNCED in 1992. A fundamental factor that leads
to the persistence of environmental problems has been the lack of awareness and
knowledge on the part of decision makers, economic agents and relevant
stakeholders on the importance of ecological integrity for sustainable
development. This is partly attributed to the lack of integration of the
various domains of sustainable development in the higher educational curricula
of most existing higher learning institutions in South East Asia. This paper
discusses the relationship between the knowledge domain and the promotion of
sustainable development ideals in national policies. The paper focuses on
presenting critical issues affecting higher education curriculum reforms as
well as related cases in Indonesia and Malaysia in the light of capacity
development for sustainable development.
This paper will contribute to improve understanding and enhance
awareness in curriculum development as far as the incorporation of sustainable
development principles is concerned.
Key
words: environmentally-based education, curriculum reforms, environmentally
minded decision makers, sustainable development.
