Indonesian Parliamentary Election

Indonesia again has quite successfully run another parliamentary election showing mature democratic development, although it raises some critics especially on how General Election Commission (KPU) has managed the election process. As a nation with relatively new in executing democratic process, it is quite fair to say that what Indonesia have been doing is already in the right track. However, the quality of election process should be improved from time to time to show to the world that we have the capacity to be one of big democratic nations in the world.
My only big concern is on how people in Indonesia enthusiastically established a new political party, although the past general election has clearly shown that it is not easy to get votes to fulfill the threshold vote limit. As we all already understood that in this year general election, the number of national political parties reached 38, increased from only 24 parties in the 2004 general election. As already shown by quick count and calculation trend from KPU's real count, the number of parties which are going to fulfill parliamentary threshold (2.5 percent of national votes) is only about 9 political parties, even though two of them are new comers. Therefore, it is desirable to limit number of parties in the future by applying more strict requirement for a new party to be recognized as a new contesting party.
